Dr. Anja Zorob

Anja Zorob is associate professor at Birzeit University (BZU) in Birzeit/Ramallah, Palestine and a research fellow of the Muwatin Institute for Democracy and Human Rights. She is a DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Long Term Lecturer and teaches at the BZU Faculty of Graduate Studies. She studied in Freiburg, Damascus and Bochum and received her PhD in Contemporary Research on the Middle East from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany. Anja Zorob has been working in different positions at the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE) at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies at Freie Universität Berlin and the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA), Hamburg. In the years 2016-2018 she served as project manager of the RUB-refugee student program ‘University without Borders’ and has been a member of the board of directors of the Centre for Mediterranean Studies (ZMS) at RUB.
In addition, Anja Zorob provided consultancy to several German and European institutions. Since the 1990s she is an active member of the German Middle East Studies Association for Contemporary Research and Documentation (DAVO).
Anja Zorob’s research and teaching record concentrates primarily on Arab/Mediterranean countries’ regional integration and European foreign policy with a focus on trade, development and migration in the framework of the EU’s Mediterranean and European Neighborhood Policies. Other key areas include political economy of development, development cooperation, and human rights as well as conflict and reconstruction in the Middle East.
